Bundle Lamp
Handmade Paper / Steel / Incandescent

The Bundle Lamp is a collection of thin steel rods, that criss-cross one another and fan out from their center to flare apart on the top and bottom, creating an open framework. The rods which support the lamp, pass through the square openings of a thin grid on which the bulb and fixture are mounted. For some reason, this construction reminds me of a bundle of sticks being used as a torch, that are gathered in the center and lit at the top.

I originally designed the lamp to display a hand-made paper that I fell in love with. The paper, which is an intense bright blue and is covered with translucent, colorless polka dots, was cut into a series of irregular triangles which were stretched over open triangular frames of thin steel. The triangles were designed to act together in concert as a series of flat shades. They are supported in the upper part of the lamp by interlacing them through the open framework of fanned out rods. The triangles can be rearranged in various configurations and at various angles. This irregular placement of the triangular shade pieces can be used to change the character and profile of the lamp. Overall, the lamp has a relatively low profile for a floor lamp and stands just over waist high. Due to the thinness of the supporting rods, the lamp itself gives an ethereal impression as it seems to float delicately above the floor.
