Pouring of Rare Light
Neon / Acrylic / Argon

This is another work that has been influenced by my desire to present neon in a more organic form. The light in this sculpture is being poured like paint from the openings of acrylic tubes. The variation in the acuity of the angles of the tubes that extend through the back panel are a further indication that pouring light (unlike paint) may very well have other dimensional effects. The tubes in this piece are called single electrode and the gas is excited by a high frequency radio transformer rather than a flow of electrons moving from one electrode to another. The tubes contain a mixture of gasses. The pink tube contains a coral phosphor and was filled with neon gas. The blue tube contains a blue phosphor and was filled with argon doped with mercury. The clear tube in the center contains neon gas doped with mercury. Because of the temperature differential the tube shows pink in the center but the mercury doping causes a blue corona to appear at the edges of the pink. Thus the central tube appears to draw and mix colors of light from the tubes on both ends.
